Happy Friday huskies! This week, we feature the 2nd Annual Innovator Awards along with one new spring co-op! Also stay updated on the the BostInno's 25 under 25 for 2022 honorees as well as the list of events that occurred for Global Entrepreneerurship Week.

Women Who Empower Innovator Awards

At the 2nd Annual Innovator Awards, Northeastern's very own Women Who Empower awarded $220,000 to 22 incredible women that embody the spirit of innovationleadershipentrepreneurshipauthenticitycommunity and inclusion. The Innovator Awards emphasize that it's about the innovator, not the innovation - meaning that these awards are given to the women, not the venture. The award ceremony honored the work of all 22 of these powerful women, that — along with their ideas, products, businesses, and services —  are already making a meaningful mark on the world.

🔔 ACTION NEEDED 🔔

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, we would like to bring your attention to the situation surrounding the ICWA act.

On Nov. 9, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on the constitutionality of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). This 44-year-old law was implemented to address the systemic removal of Native children from their families, communities, and culture.

If the Supreme Court decided to dismantle ICWA, it would have devastating effects not only on Native children and communities but for Tribes’ inherent right to self-govern and determine what is best for their citizens.

Extra Credit with Professor Mark Sivak! 📝

Here I share something design or tech related from the week for those looking for just a little extra credit.

As we move toward Thanksgiving I came across an announcement today by a cultivated meat start-up that they have FDA approval. Upside Foods makes cultivated meat, meaning they grow meat cells without actually growing chickens. The advantages of this kind of animal protein include lower animal suffering (there aren’t any animals), potentially better nutrition, and a much lower risk of disease (avian flu is wreaking havoc in the US). The industry has tried to move away from the term “lab-grown meat” for good reason but the way to think about a lot of these processes is similar to a brewery. Breweries essentially cultivate yeast, and these cultivate meat. While I have tried impossible burgers and other plant-based meat I have yet to try cultivated animal meat but I am interested. The Gastropod podcast is one of my favorites and this episode from a year ago is a good introduction to the alternative meat space. Keep an open mind and stomach when listening and reading about these technologies, the potential positive impact to the environment, people, and animals is as big as my plate will be this Thanksgiving.
